Bipolar Plus Life Insurance Does Not Equal Decline!

January 7th, 2008

I share the frustration that people with well controlled bipolar disorder suffer when they run into the ignorant masses of life insurance agents who not only don’t understand the disorder, but don’t understand how to get it successfully underwritten at competitive prices.

I had a call today from a gentleman who had been told by numerous agents that he wasn’t insurable due to bipolar disorder. The agent didn’t ask, or probably even know to ask if it was bipolar 1 or 2. The agents sure didn’t ask what really amounts to the most relevant question that an underwriter wants to have answered. Are you compliant with your treatment and is your life (family and job) stable?

Bottom line. Don’t take the suggestion of decline as gospel. Don’t work with agents who don’t have bipolar clients. Don’t give up. Most people with bipolar fit the underwriting criteria above, so don’t give up.
